The minimum amount of potassium you should consume is 2000 mg per day. The optimal amount is 3500 mg per day. Don’t let the number scare you, this can easily be obtained in a diet of at least five fruits and vegetables per day.
You can find potassium fruits and meat. Some examples of food with high amounts of potassium includes: bananas, milk, avocados, oranges, fish, dry beans, peanut butter, cantaloupe, mushrooms, spinach, potatoes and watermelon.
Potassium should not be consumed from salt substitutes such as Potassium Chloride. This may be dangerous and put your life at risk. Only take a potassium supplement if your doctor prescribes it.
There are two morals of this story. First, eat five servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Not only will you get enough potassium; you get many other nutrients.
Second, moderation is key. As with all vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes, too much or too little can be detrimental to your health. People who have consumed an adequate amount of potassium have a lower chance getting a stroke. In addition, may prevent the development of kidney stones.
